Your Home’s Top 3 Weak Spots for Burglars

The Gist

  • Is your home as secure as you think it is? Let’s dive into the facts a bit more.

In April, I shared a story about my neighbors’ unsettling experience following a home break-in. Thankfully no one was hurt and nothing was taken, but the break-in left her feeling vulnerable and unsure of her next steps. One of the biggest takeaways from the incident was that she had considered purchasing a security system before the break-in but felt that she had enough protection of her own to keep her safe.

This got me thinking about the potential weak spots around my own home. With crime on the rise in our communities, it’s not enough to just lock the doors at night. So, I’m here to shine a light on the common but often overlooked areas that burglars target. Versatility is the name of the game here.

Take a walk with me around your home.

#1: Front Door Window(s)

First impressions matter! While your front door may be sturdy & solid, the windows around your front door are what burglars find most attractive. If you have windows that surround your door, it can be as simple as breaking a small piece of glass and reaching in to unlock your door. If you have windows next to your door, do you know for certain if your locks are latched?

A video doorbell camera is the best way to deter a potential perpetrator. Not only can you keep an eye on your front door whether you’re in or out of your house, but you can also record footage through the camera for access later.

One more pro tip for the front of your home: put up visual security signs and place security stickers in your windows. Nearly 60% of convicted burglars who participated in criminal justice study admitted that evidence of a security system causes them to seek an alternative target altogether.

#2: Sliding Glass Doors

Sliding glass doors are often located on the side or in the back of a home, making them an ideal entry point for burglars. These popular break-in points are an easy target to get inside a home because they use latches (not locks) that can be unlocked by simply jiggling the handle. If you have a sliding glass door around your home, how many times do you think you forgot to lock it?
Adding a security bar to prevent your glass door from being opened and a security camera with advanced human detection alarms that alert you immediately can help prevent forced entry into your home.

3: Detached Structures

Detached structures on your property, such as outbuildings, barns, sheds, garages, greenhouses, shops, etc., are goldmines for burglars.. Why? For starters, these areas aren’t connected to your home. Burglars also know these structures typically house expensive items like power tools, sporting & camping equipment, lawn equipment, grills and smokers, even vehicles. All of these expensive items can be turned into ready cash.
These areas generally aren’t made to be secure. If we had to lock up our barn, I don’t even know where we’d start! You may not be able to burglar-proof an outbuilding but you can make it harder to break into so anyone trying might decide they don’t have the time to mess with it. A high-intensity floodlight with a built-in video camera, siren and motion detection alerts is a sure-fire way to protect your valuables.
