The Alarm.com mobile app relies on smart Video Analytics to filter out false alerts and only record meaningful events. Setting up these recording rules correctly prevents your app from being flooded with notifications and significantly extends battery life on wire-free cameras.

Navigate to Menu (☰) > Video > Settings (Gear Icon) > Recording Rules > Add Rule and select Video Analytics.

A Ground Zone triggers a recording when an object lingers inside a designated area for a set number of seconds. A Tripwire triggers an instant recording the moment an object crosses a specific digital line in a chosen direction.

This usually happens if your detection zone is too close to the edge of the camera’s view. The camera needs a split second to wake up and apply AI filtering before it begins recording.

Yes. Inside the rule settings, you can use the Minimum Time Between Alerts dropdown to throttle notifications (e.g., receive maximum one alert every 1, 3, or 5 minutes), even if the camera continues to record back-to-back clips.

To grant a spouse or secondary user access to your Alarm.com (ADC) cameras, you must create a separate Login for them within your existing account.

  1. Open User Management: Log into your Alarm.com mobile app. Tap the Menu (☰) icon in the top left corner, then select Users.
  2. Add New User: Tap the + (Plus) icon in the top right corner. Enter the secondary user’s first and last name, then tap Create.
  3. Set Contact Info: Tap Add Contact, select Email, and input your spouse’s email address. Choose their preferred language, then tap Save.
  4. Create Login Credentials: Tap Create Login. Enter a unique username for them (their email address is recommended). Tap Save.
  5. Assign Camera Permissions: Under the Permissions or Roles screen, toggle on Video or Live View access. Select whether you want them to have Read Only access (viewing live feeds and clips) or Full Control (managing recording rules).
  6. Send Invite: Tap Save. An automated activation email containing a temporary link will immediately be sent to your spouse’s inbox.
  7. Finalize Activation: Have your spouse check their email, click the link, set up their private password, select a security question, and log into the Alarm.com app on their phone.
  1. Navigate to Users: Log into your account at alarm.com. Click Users in the left-hand navigation sidebar.
  2. Add New Login: Click the Manage Logins tab at the top of the page, then click the Create A Login button.
  3. Enter Account Details: Input your spouse’s email address in the field provided, choose a custom username for them, and click Save.
  4. Configure Access Rights: On the Manage Login Permissions page, select their role. To give them camera access without full administrative rights, select Custom or Standard User, and check the box next to Video.
  5. Save and Complete: Click Save. Your spouse will receive an invitation email to create their password and finalize their independent login.

Step 1: Check the global “Mute Notifications” switch

  • Alarm.com has a master pause switch that temporarily silences all phone alerts. She needs to verify this is turned off.
  • Open the Alarm.com app and log in.
  • Tap the Menu (☰) icon in the top left corner of the screen.
  • Look directly at the menu list. Near the middle or top, she will see an option labeled Mute Notifications.
  • Verify status:
    • If it says “Muted” or shows a countdown timer, notifications are paused. Tap Mute Notifications and select Unmute to restore them instantly.
    • If it simply says “Mute Notifications” with no active timers, the global pause is not the issue. Proceed to Step 2

Step 2: Verify the specific Camera Recording Rule is active

  • Even if global notifications are active, the individual camera rule might be paused or switched off.
  • Tap the Menu (☰) icon again.
  • Tap on Video, then tap the Settings (Gear Icon) in the top right corner.
  • Tap on Recording Rules.
  • Scroll through the list to find the rule for her specific camera (e.g., “Front Door Analytics”).
  • Verify status:
    • Look at the toggle switch next to the rule. If it is grey or toggled to the left, it is paused. Tap the switch to turn it Green/On.
    • If the rule is already green, tap on the Pencil (Edit) Icon next to the rule.
    • Scroll down to the Notifications section and ensure her specific name, phone number, or email is actively checked under the recipient list. Tap Save if any changes are made.

Step 3: Check phone-level system permissions

  • If the Alarm.com app settings are perfectly correct, her phone’s operating system might be blocking the app entirely.
  • For iPhone (iOS): Open iPhone Settings > Notifications > Alarm.com. Ensure Allow Notifications is toggled ON and that Alerts (Lock Screen, Notification Center, Banners) are all checked.
  • For Android: Open phone Settings > Apps > Alarm.com > Notifications. Ensure Show Notifications is enabled and not set to “Silent.

Perimeter Guard® is an advanced AI deterrence feature built directly into Jade Security cameras that shifts your security from passive recording to active prevention. When the camera’s onboard Video Analytics detect a person trespassing inside a designated digital boundary, the camera instantly flashes its high-lumen spotlight, sounds an audible siren, or chirps warning tones.

Smart Video Highlights (Highlights Reel) is an AI-powered summary tool in the Alarm.com app that condenses an entire day of recorded footage into a brief, easy-to-watch video clip. The tool uses advanced onboard technology to automatically analyze your day’s recorded clips, strip out empty footage, and stitch together the most critical events into a single, high-speed highlight reel.

See how it works:

Instead of manually scrolling through a timeline, users type or speak a direct description of what they are looking for (e.g., “red pickup truck last week” or “grocery bag at front door Friday”) into the search bar, and the AI instantly surfaces the matching saved video clip thumbnails. This feature accelerates security investigations by isolating relevant activities across multiple cameras at once.

Familiar Face Analytics is an AI facial recognition feature that lets users name up to five recurring visitors captured by the camera. By turning generic alerts into personalized notifications (e.g., “Mom at the Front Door”), it allows users to instantly differentiate between household members and unknown strangers without opening the app, cutting down on notification fatigue while prioritizing true security anomalies.

Geo-Services (Geo-Fencing) is a location-based automation feature in the Alarm.com app that creates a secure, virtual boundary around your property using your smartphone’s GPS. Instead of relying on manual controls or strict schedules, it automatically manages your smart home as you enter or leave this boundary. By simply coming and going, your system can automatically lock doors, adjust the thermostat, turn on lights, and pause interior cameras for privacy. It also acts as a reliable failsafe by sending an alert if you leave home without arming your security system, all without ever tracking or storing your exact location history.

Step 1: Turn it on via your Phone

  • Ensure your smartphone’s system settings have Location Services set to “Always Allow” and “Precise Location” turned on for the Alarm.com app.
  • Open the Alarm.com app and tap the Menu (☰) icon in the top left.
  • Tap Geo-Services (sometimes listed under Settings or Places).
  • Toggle the switch to On and tap Enable to confirm. Your phone is now registered as a active “Geo-Device”.

Step 2: Configure your Boundaries & Rules

  • Default Setup: Alarm.com automatically creates a default “Home” geo-fence with a 1-mile radius centered on your security panel’s installation address.
  • To Customize: Log into the Alarm.com Desktop Customer Portal or use the Places/Settings tab in the app. Navigate to Settings > Geo-Services to draw new boundaries (like a workplace fence) or adjust the radius size.
  • To Apply to Cameras: Go to Video > Settings > Recording Rules. Edit an existing rule and check the box next to “Except when a Geo-Device is inside the fence” to automatically pause your interior cameras whenever you or your spouse are home.
